A Busy Weekend

Gwennie unaware of weekend excitement to come.

This will be a busy weekend.  DD2 is going to be moving out soon.  So this weekend we are going to make some decisions about paint and carpeting.  Mr BC and his sister own a small rental house they inherited from their mom, and DD2 will be moving in, I will be sharing some befores and afters as we make some changes to the property.

Mr BC's sister is going away for the weekend so we will be dogsitting their pooches.  One was Grandmas little dog and she is about 15 or 16 years old so there will be a house full here before too long.  So our two dogs are going to be having a play date and overnite.

I have already skyped with the grandsons and Caшa is growing fast, he is already 12 pounds and has the brightest eyes.  Лука, is moving beyond the small world of home. He went to the park on Thursday and was hit in the head with a rock. OUCH!  That was the topic of conversation along with the airplanes made of Legos.  He has another playdate at his house with Jasper and one of his two dads, what a modern world.  

Comfort Food at its Finest: Eggs Goldenrod

From earliest memory I can see my mom making this recipe.  When I learned how to make it myself I remember how easy it was to prepare.  This was usually a weekend breakfast with bacon or sausage.  We ALWAYS had it once in the week after Easter to use up the hardboiled eggs.  It comes from a time when folks were not worried about cholesterol. My mom learned to make it in home economics and since I went to the same school with the same teacher,  I learned to make it too.  There is no a foolproof way to adjust it for the fat and the calories either, so while I occasionally made it for my kids,  I simply do not make this anymore. However, it is very tasty and heartwarming and was the first thing that popped into my head when I read the writing prompt.
The next thing that popped in was pineapple upside down cake.  Which mom only made when we were expecting visitors after church on Sunday or Wednesday evenings.  It was a  recipe that she could make ahead, pop in the oven when she got home and serve warm. Also it meant we got to stay up later on a school night! 

Goldenrod Eggs
• 2 hard-cooked eggs

• 2 tablespoons butter
• 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
• 1/2 teaspoon salt
• 1/8 teaspoon pepper
• 1 cup milk
• 2 slices bread, toasted
Directions
1. Cut eggs in half; remove yolks and set aside. Chop egg whites; set aside. In a small saucepan, melt butter. Stir in the flour, salt and pepper until smooth. Gradually stir in milk. Bring to a boil; cook and stir for 1-2 minutes or until thickened.


2. Stir in egg whites; heat through. Pour over toast. Force egg yolks through a sieve to break into small pieces; sprinkle over sauce.

London to Brighton Run

I have a minute before we leave....Our vintage MG club has an annual London to Brighton run every year in March. We try not to miss it, this year was interesting as we had planned to see Darling Grandson this weekend so we are going to do both. The run will start in Orange County with an English breakfast and we will ramble thru lovely sites ending up at the beach (Brighton) for lunch, then Mr BC and I will head home and then up to Santa Barbara to see the babe! I found out this week that his name translates into Harbor in Serbian so he will be known here as Harbor Master!

Last Weekend

Because I had been house bound for many weekends, last Saturday we checked out Pechanga Casino in Temecula for the day. It is only about 90 minutes away and we had never been.
It was ok, neither of us are big gamblers. DH couldn't find a poker machine that wasn't homesteaded by gamers. So he was not excited. I sat down at a Video nickle slot and tried to figure out how to play. You don't just sit down, put a nickle in and Pull anymore. I couldn't figure out the play but I did determine that hearts (and these were valentine type of hearts) were important! I slipped in a $5.00 bill picked how many lines and how many nickles I wanted to play and pushed spin. It just kept spinning and sprinkling hearts all over the screen. The lady next to me said it had to do with free spins that I was getting every time. I then just watched it pile up credits and make music and SPIN. When it finally stopped about 5-10 minutes later I figured that I ought to see what all the fuss was about and cash out. Was I surprised to find it was $414.50!
Wow that was easy.....sooo I put the receipt away safely and put in another $5, pressed all the appropriate buttons again, then again, then again....and POOF the fiver was gone. So I got up and I was gone. I found my husband, cashed in the receipt and we left. Stayed about 2 hours.

So despite the rain forcast, I am taking my $400 this weekend and staying at the Historic Mission Inn in Riverside for a Valentine weekend with my Valentine. I will have more to say after our stay and tour and dinner and brunch. TripAdvisor guests give it high marks.

Since DH retired, he has become a great house husband. I just started letting him do the laundry. Let is the appropriate word here as that was the one household task I didn't want him to do. He finally convinced me and is doing a great job (after sorting and drying instructions) so now our week ends are free for fun and games especially now that I get around easier. The last weekend we tried to get away, I broke my foot, so we are going to stay put in the Hotel, there seems to be lots to do. I can't wait!
