Fun Fifteen-Sunday Stealing

Welcome back to Sunday Stealing which originated on WTIT: The Blog authored by Bud Weiser. Here we will steal all types of memes from every corner of the blogosphere

1. You have been awarded the time off from work and an all-expenses paid week anywhere in the United States. The catch is that it must be somewhere you have not been before. Where do you choose to visit? Since we plan to go to New England one day.....I would have to say Alaska....maybe on a cruise.

2. Name your guilty pleasures. Going to Ross when I drop the dogs off for grooming once a month, then I go across to TJMaxx, also Pedicures and Iced Coffee, Naps.

3. The best kind of milkshake is:  Probably something with berries in it.

4. What do you value most in other people?
Fun loving, not fettered by stupid politics, and who values other people.

5. Be honest. Do you sneak some raw cookie dough when you’re baking cookies?  Oh yes even if it has raw eggs in it.  I even lick cake batter off the beaters.

6. Have you ever looked back at your life and realized that something you thought was a bad thing was actually a blessing in disguise? I can't think of anything right now....most of the time bad things are just bad.

7. What is the most beautiful place you have ever visited? I think maybe Japan, such green and lush gardens.

 8. Are you more of a thinker or a feeler?  I think I am more of a feeler, I have a great deal of empathy.

9. Name three things you are thankful for right now. That I see the grandsons next month, and DD2 is happy and content and I get to take a nap today.

10. Have you ever participated in a three-legged race?  I don't think so but I have jumped in burlap bags.

11. When you are at an event that plays the National Anthem, do you place your hand over your heart? Yes, and I usually sing as long as others can drown me out.

12. Have you ever been on the wrong side of the law? I have had a traffic ticket once.

13. When was the last time you unintentionally surprised someone else? I think when I did not object to Mr BC finishing the restoration of the Triumph.

14. When was the last time you deliberately surprised someone else? We had a surprise birthday party for my dad several years ago and we really got him.  He suspected nothing.

15. What was the last really funny movie you watched? I watched Beetlejuice not long ago.  It still makes me laugh.

Friday Fragments-McDonalds of My Youth

Half-Past Kissin' Time

The original McDonald's mascot (Photo: Melanie Dunea)
There is still an old style, (the one I remember), McDonalds in Downey, CA.
Do you remember the original mascot, a chef named Speedy?  Ronald McDonald wasn't introduced until the 1960's.

I played with this for about 10 minutes:

Gentle Brain is an interactive web toy where you can play around with your brain. If you drop it, and you will, that’s okay, because there’s another one where that one came from, and it’s just as good. (via the Presurfer

This week the weather has been cool again.  It has been a strange July. One week temps in the high 90's and the next week in the 70's.  It has been good dog walking weather for Gwennie and her double coat and of course Totem and Caspar.  When it is hot I try to get out as early as I can. Except for the one rainy day, we have been able to walk in the cemetary, and the local park later in the day. Weather is due to change again next week and be hot.

This was pinned at Pintrest, although I found it on another poster,  I have got to buy some  rubbing alcohol today, and give it a try.  Mr BC is always wanting an ice pack for his aches and pains and prefers the soft ones that are pliable.   I use them on my ankle as well when I have walked too far.  I already have a purchased one that I put in a ziploc when it started leaking. Ziploc bags are the best!

Wendell's Magic Wand Chat

1.  Do you ever watch old TV shows or movies from your childhood or youth? When we first got Netflix, I watched all of the Star Trek Franchise. It took almost 2 years.

2.  Have you ever adopted a rescued animal? Oh yes, most recently, we adopted Caspar a minature dashound, he is adorable and now we have 3 dogs, Totem is a rescue and Gwennie our corgi, is from a breeder. The are all between 6-7 years old.

3.  Are you good at keeping track of paperwork and records? Sort of, I have a file cabinet and a fire proof box.  It works well if I remember to file things back.

4.  What would you like the Magic Wendell Fairy to poof with his wand, and turn into a treat for you? Any snack or sweet you would like. It doesn't have tpo do with carrots, or HE'D eat it!  I have been looking all over for peach ice cream. Since there has been a recall on some peaches, I might not find it this year. i'll get him a carrot cake.

5.  Tell me something interesting-please.
I made a peach pie and I am eating with vanilla ice cream.  It will have to do if Wendell can't come through.

Saturday 9 in the Potterverse

1) This song refers to the summer breezes and winds of mid-July. Now that July is almost over, how would you describe this month's weather where you are?  The first two weeks were lovely so cool and dry, more like Spring than July, now it is just hot and sticky.

2) The lyrics mention the "perfect plans." Do you have plans for today? Or will you just let this summer Saturday unfold? We will walk the dogs and then decide, I would like to go out to dinner for my birthday.
3) This week's artist, k. d. lang, attended Red Deer Community College in Alberta. Red Deer's school colors are green, black and silver. What were your school colors?  Blue, white and red....we are the Matadors.

4) She had a bit part in the 2006 murder mystery The Black Dahlia. Do you enjoy murder mysteries? I like them on television, especially British mystery.  We enjoy the whole Inspector Morse genre on PBS and we just subscribed to Acorn which is entirely British TV. We are picking up the rest of the Midsomer Murders there, with the new guy.  It has many other shows that we can explore this summer.

5) Ms. lang is a vegetarian. What's the last beef, chicken, pork or fish you ate? A hamburger several evenings ago, with real beef, rather than vegie or turkey burger.
6) In 2000, when this song was released, California suffered a series of blackouts. Has your power gone out this summer?  Yes, this spring, it has gone out with some of our thunderstorms.  It is not usually out for more than an hour.

7) Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire also came out in 2000. Did you read it?  I haven't read them, but I have seen and enjoyed the movies.  I usually watch one of the movies again during a marathon on tv to pick up more of the plot.  I was usually confused by some of the minutia of the Potterverse.

These are some of the things I miss, in every Harry Potter Movie

8) Which would you rather have on your hot dog: sauerkraut, ketchup/mustard/relish or chili? Ketchup or Chili.  I don't eat too many hot dogs except when we go camping.
9) If you had your choice, which would you prefer: new shoes or a new wallet?  New shoes.  I have to go shopping for a pair soon, that my orthotic will fit into. They work with my sport shoe but I need some new shoes for every day, as I wear the orthotic all the time. It has worked wonders for my feet.

Friday Fragments-HAPPY DAAA AY TO MEEE!

Half-Past Kissin' Time
It is time for Friday Fragments from Half Past Kissing Time

Happy Birthday Katie - on the Google page!
I woke up today and didn't remember right away..... that it was my birthday, until Google and Mr BC told me.  Mr BC sang out Happy DAAA AY to you. That is our Birthday song since DD2 sang Happy DAAA AY to MEEE! when she was 4 years old. He admitted later that he had just seen a reminder on Facebook  It is a disconcerting fact that the interwebs know too much about you.  We hope to go out to dinner for my birthday, tomorrow with DD2!
But this is so true too!
I don't have corgoon.  Just one sweet Gwennie.

"Corgi" is a Welsh word - a compound of cor (dwarf) and ci (dog).  The proper plural form is thus "Corgwn" -
- which  would be pronounced something like "corgoon."

"I list this as "trivia" because the word has been so Anglicized that "corgis" is in common usage, and your use of "corgwn" in a conversation will be seen as pompous intellectualism, unless perhaps you engage your audience by also sharing some of the other English words derived from Welsh (penguin?)" TYWKIWDBI.

I learned about corgwn from TYWKIWDBI  a blogger I follow for his quite interesting and varied posts. He got it from a QI podcast another QI site I will explore.

This is not a commercial for English Muffins....but, I am so sorry I did not buy two of these as they are to die for and when I go back to get some more, they will not be available.  It really tastes like apple pie.

Hippo has things to do.  Just like me, so have a great weekend.

Grown-Up Chats

1.  Other than those who live in your home, who's the last person who came to your front door? It was the guy who mows our yard and our daughter's yard.  He was done and I needed to pay him.  It was well worth it.  He will come again in 2 weeks.

2.  Do you have many photos around your home? Pictures of DD's graduations. And pictures of the grandsons.  I also have a prominent picture of Mr.BC's mom.  It is her HS graduation pic.  We live in the house she left to us and we can see her every day.

3.  Do you like mint? Is there a favorite type of mint for you? How do you enjoy it?  Yes, I love mint, all kinds.  Currently I have a bag of Mint M&M's in the kitchen and enjoy a handful when I remember they are there.

4.  Do you enjoy your own parties and other times with guests, or are you so busy working...? I mostly have folks for dinner and I try to make meals that can be prepared ahead, so I can enjoy my guests.

5.  What do you want to be when you grow up more? Job, hobby, self improvement, etc. As I am a senior citizens I think I have grown up about as much as I can.  I just hope I don't grow infantile.

Living on the Corner of Lead and Zinc - Saturday 9

If you're not familiar with today's song, you can hear it here.

1) Recorded by Johnny Cash, "Ring of Fire" was written by his wife, June Carter. Johnny's daughter Roseanne says it's about "the transformative power of their love." What's your favorite love song?  Unchained Melody by the
Righteous Brothers.  All incarnations and covers..

2) Though more than 50 years old, this song is still popular today. Country Music Television named it one of the best and most requested of all time. Are you a country music fan?  Yes, I love most country music,  Johnny Cash is way up there with the classic artists.  I also love some of the newer singers.

3) This recording features mariachi horns, inspired by Mexican folk music. Have you ever been to Mexico?  Yes, living in CA, I have been over the border in Baja several times.  When I was 18 I went with a group tour to Mexico City and Acapulco. It was totally different from Baja California.

4) Cash's birth certificate said, "J. R. Cash," and "J.R." is what his parents always called him. When he enlisted in the Air Force, Uncle Sam refused to let him simply go by initials, so he chose the name "John." If you could choose a different name for yourself, what would it be?  My mom wanted to call me Suzanne, but my dad said no....I still wonder why.  In the 60's I changed my name from Kathy to Katie.

5) Cash and his first wife, Vivian, had their first date at a roller skating rink. Tell us about one of your first dates. Mr BC and I went to a drive-in movie on a double date for our first date. He was very polite, but I can't say much for the couple in the back seat.  We never dated with them again.  We saw The Loved One and Cheyenne Autumn.  He kissed me during the second movie.

6) Cash died in September, 2003, four months after he lost his second wife, and love of his life, June. The cause of death given was complications from diabetes, but his children believe he died of a broken heart. Do you think that's possible? I think that happens a lot to long married older couples with health issues.  But short of a heart attack, I don't think so.

7) Cash was known as "The Man in Black." What color do you wear most often? Pastel colors, pink, blue, yellow. I don't wear dark colors much now that I don't work.

8) There's a Johnny Cash Museum in Nashville. What's the last museum you visited? Crystal Bridges, it is an American art museum in Bentonville, Arkansas.  I wrote about it here.  It is a lovely spot to visit and is a great museum, you can visit for free.

9) A stretch of Tennessee Highway 31E is known as "Johnny Cash Parkway." What street in your town is named for a famous person? We have a Jefferson Street here in 'Craterville' (so called for our awful streets) I would assume it is for the president, of the same name.  We also have a Daugherty St. named for W.A.
Daugherty, who opened up lead mines in the general area.  It has been a somewhat ugly area around the edges of our towns, ever since, until the government started cleaning up the chat piles and mines in the 90's.  We have a lot of streets named after miners and mines.
