Puppies, Puppies Puppies

One of these cuties is going to be mine in about a month, they are 5 weeks old and very friendly according to the breeder. I am trying to arrange a visit before pick up so I can see them in action. They are Pembroke Welsh Corgi's. Mr Bankerchick had one when he was younger but I think it was a Cardigan Corgi mix. He loved that dog and he is already in love with these. He wants to take them all, however, Bankerchick is saying no! Oh.......I want them all too!

Happy 420 Day

Monday night our manager took us to dinner for our quarterly celebration and I actually learned something. One of our younger supervisors asked us older ones if we knew what 420 was? We all shook our heads no and they told us. I had to learn more so per Wikipedia's definition: It is widely accepted that in 1971, a group of teenagers at San Rafael High School in San Rafael, California, calling themselves "The Waldos", used to meet every day after school at 4:20 p.m. to smoke marijuana at the Louis Pasteur statue. The term became part of their group's salute, "420 Louis,"and it eventually caught on more widely. Many cannabis users continue to observe 4:20 as a time to smoke communally. By extension April 20 ("4/20" in U.S. dating shorthand) has evolved into a counterculture holiday, where people gather to celebrate and consume cannabis.
Today, I was observing one of my new hire's helping a customer (I train in a call center) and at the close of the call the customer said "Happy 420 Day" and she cheerfully replied, "well you too!" I was chuckling when she ended the call and I had to explain to her what it meant. She laughed too, a little sheepishly and then she wanted to know how Quality Assurance would have scored her. A good question....probably very high in Rapport Building!

Wordless Wednesday #5

Not a lot to say lately

We have been worried some about Grandma. She is back in the hospital and Mr. Bankerchick is home after 6 weeks. She has a stomach problem that seems somewhat unrelated to the heart surgery, so the doctors are deciding what to do. She went in dehydrated and nauseous. Right now Mr. BC is waiting to see whether to fly back. We figure right now after 6 weeks with her, since she is in the hospital, they are taking care of her and there is not a lot he can do, so we wait from afar.

The Gift of Spring from Missouri

Mr Bankerchick posted this picture for me. We lived in Missouri for a couple of years while he was going to University. Being a California girl not use to the seasons, I always thought Spring and Autumn were the best seasons. The weather was always an interesting change from California's Hot and Cold. We stayed long enough for DD1 to arrive then left for California again when she was 4 months old and Daddy had graduated. An interesting coincidence was the Maternity Ward at St Johns Hospital, Joplin, is now the Cardiac Center and Mr BC spent a lot of time in the waiting room when DD1 was born and more days when Grandma had her surgery and was recovering. The first picture is the dogwood outside of Grandma's house. The second is by her driveway. I love Spring.

Mr BC is starting for home tomorrow. He will have been gone over a month, and I will be glad when he is safely home. His mother is having good days and bad days but in general is good, a visiting nurse comes 2 times a week, she has therapy once a week and his sister, who lives across the street is close at hand as well as her 2 kids. We are hoping for the best, as she has been doing things her way, not eating enough and sitting in her chair too long. I am hoping that when she is semi-on her own she will realize she has nothing to prove to anyone and will decide to do what she is told, as long as it is not her kids telling her what to do. She has always been stubborn, but usually minded her Doctors. Mr BC says the nurse is great and tells her like it is, I think if she is told she might not be able to live unassisted unless she gets her health back, that might be the carrot to dangle in front of her.

I'm De-lurking this weekend!

There is actually a National Delurking Week. However, I have commented on all my favorite spots (where I can) and I am adding some new links as I continue this morning by commenting on some other blogs I have lurked about this month and have decided they are link-worthy.

Visual DNA

I love these types of quizzes, I got this from reading Akelamalu's blog. I have to admit it fit me perfectly as I read thru it. I didn't save it, so you can read it as it probably would haunt my e-mails forever, however the pictures explain me alot.

Scientists: Genes determine dogs' sizes.....DUH!

Well, the picture caught my eye anyway. I read the article if only to see how much money we taxpayers contributed to this startling information the AP thought we needed to know. It turned out to be a little more than a big duh!

Dogs have the largest variation in body size of any land animal, so researchers led by Elaine A. Ostrander of the National Human Genome Research Institute decided to look into the reasons why.

K. Gordon Lark of the University of Utah, a co-author of the report, pointed out that dogs have 200 to 300 diseases in common with people, including high blood pressure, autoimmune diseases and cancer.

Known as a regulatory sequence, the difference is on dog chromosome 15 next to a previously known gene named IGF1, for insulin-like growth factor 1. The hormone controlled by the IGF1 gene helps mammals — including people — grow from birth to adolescence.
In small dog breeds a mutation in the sequence next to the gene kept them from growing larger, the researchers said.

So the research really has to do with extending this research to disease etc, in dogs, to the effects of this same gene in humans. Now why couldn't they say something smart like that in the headline. You can read the whole AP article here. The picture is still great! And I guess it is ok if some of my tax dollars were part of the grant. Now, if science could only figure out why cats always sit right on top of the newspaper you are reading! Nala.......MOVE!

Thursday Thirteen #3

Things I Wish I Had Done Last Week
  1. I wish I had done my taxes last weekend, so they would be completed, even if though I am going to wait until the due date to send them. I have to do them this weekend as we are going to Santa Barbara on tax weekend
  2. I should have made an appointment to have the cat groomed and if I call today they may be booked and it will be two weeks until I can get it done. (they were booked)
  3. I wished I had called Mr. Bankerchick in Missouri last Friday and Saturday instead of only on Sunday afternoon. He brought Grandma home from the hospital on Friday and I thought he would be busy, (and I was lazy) He was very upset that his mom was not minding him, and he needed someone to vent to, she was feeling better and thought she knew better than the DR. She is having some good days and some bad days and is grumpy and depressed a little. I am calling him every day sometimes twice.
  4. I wish I had taken the train more last week so that I could read my book. The Princes of Ireland: The Dublin Saga by Edward Rutherfurd. It is a long book and he writes rather like Mitchener. It is good and I would have more of it read if I had taken the train instead of driving.
  5. I should have fussed more when the tire store did not have my tire on the day they said they would and since I did not call or go last Saturday, I had to be there early Monday morning and they still didn't have it. I was pissed, but I didn't tell them how unhappy I was. I need to be more assertive but tires are a guy thing and I was out of my element. This was the 4th time they screwed up on 4 tires. No more tires from them. Next time I'll let someone else piss me off.
  6. I wish I had stayed out of the shoe store. Too many cute sandels and I won't be wearing them because of my broken ankle.
  7. I should have spent more time doing some good writing on my blog, instead of taking the easy way out lately and posting pictures.
  8. I should have gone to the training meeting Monday, since I got volunteered to work on a project, because I do such good powerpoints.
  9. I should have gone to Costco to pick up some more raspberries, they have such a short season it will probably be over when I go this weekend.
  10. I keep looking at the stack of storage boxes, that I told Mr Bankerchick that I would go thru and pick out the stuff that could go to Goodwill. He will be back next week an at this rate, the boxes will still be stacked in my Dining room, and we will have to rush them to storage if company comes.
  11. I wish I did not procrastinate so much, and had the energy to try the treadmill. I have been using my foot as an excuse too long. I could start out real slow.
  12. I wish I had remembered the last load in the dryer on Sunday night before this morning, when my black jeans were wrinkled.
  13. I should start my Thursday Thirteen earlier than 5:oo am ThursdayMorning. It is now 6:46 PM Get Get the Thursday Thirteen code here!

I KNEW IT, WITHOUT THE QUIZ

You Are Peeps

You're the type that's more likely to play with your food than actually eat it.

I just love Peeps especially after I punch a hole in the cellophane and let them sit for a week or so. I think this comes from when I was little I didn't like them so much and after all the chocolate and jelly beans were eaten they were the only things left so I ate them.

All Fools Day, Would that be Us?

(cartoon credit)

Who are the biggest "Fools" of them all?
Can you imagine working at this outfit. It has a little over 500 employees with the following statistics:
29 have been accused of spousal abuse
7 have been arrested for fraud
19 have been accused of writing bad checks
117 have bankrupted at least two businesses
3 have been arrested for assault
71 cannot get a credit card due to bad credit
14 have been arrested on drug-related charges
8 have been arrested for shoplifting
21 are current defendants in lawsuits
In 1998 alone, 84 were stopped for drunk driving.
Yes, you guessed it! It's the 535 members of the United States Congress.
The same group that cranks out hundreds of new laws designed to keep the rest of
us in line.
