Merry Christmas-Saturday 9

1. As you can see, when Sam Winters was a little girl, she loved giving her annual wish list to Santa. If you could ask Santa for anything at all, right now, what would it be?
I would love to have a slightly used small car just to tow behind our RV when we travel next fall.

2. Are you currently on the Naughty or Nice list? How did you get there?

I think, my grandsons would say, I am on his nice list, and I know they will think that when, they open their Christmas Presents.

3. Are you traveling this Christmas? If so, are you going by car, plane or train?

I traveled last Tuesday. by many planes, to Santa Barbara, CA.  It was a very long trip, three planes, four airports.
4. Did you buy yourself a gift this year?

Not yet, I will probably pick up some earrings as I did not bring any with me.  My gift is really this trip.

5. What's your favorite holiday-themed movie or TV special? Have you seen it yet this year? Last year, I shared Christmas Vacation because I have several favorites and we had the same question.  Another favorite is Love Actually, which takes place at Christmas.  I watched on Netflix last Sunday afternoon and I love the music.  I has some of my favorite male actors in it too.

6. Which do you prefer: candy canes or gingerbread? Gingerbread for sure! I like almost anything ginger.

7. Close your eyes and tell us the first carol that comes to mind.

Silver Bells, since I sang it to my grandson Caшa last night, when I put him to bed.

8. What's your favorite winter beverage?

Hot Buttered Rum, my dad use to make it Christmas Eve.

9. What will you remember most about 2013?

Sentimental Gifts-A Quiz

I found this on another blog and thought it was interesting.
Kind of like a horoscope, it reads so right for me.

You love gifts that touch your heart. Anything that's emotional or nostalgic instantly wins you over.
You believe that a gift should say something about the relationship between the giver and recipient.

You think that any gift that is genuinely given - even a handwritten note - is the perfect present for you.
Photographs, personalized items, and homemade goodies are all favorites of yours. You like any gift where it's clear the giver was thinking of you and only you.

This is one of the results from the quiz, What Kind of Presents Do You Like?

Jingle Bell Rock-Saturday 9

Saturday 9: Jingle Bell Rock

1) Sam has affection for this song because, when she was very young, she tap-danced to it for a Christmas recital. Her parents told her she was wonderful. Do you have any memories from a school/church program or pageant -- either as a child onstage or an adult in the audience?
I remember the first Christmas Program where we sang only secular songs and did not have a Nativity Scene.  At the time I didn't really understand why and wished we were singing the old standards.  I remember that was the year we learned Silver Bells, a song I love this time of year.

2) Ok, she admits it: After too many cups of holiday cheer, Sam did a few steps of her "Jingle Bell Rock" routine at last year's company Christmas party. Have you ever done anything at a coworker get together that you now regret?
Sort of....I remember telling a story of someone, I dated in college, and that poor Hungarian man became the butt of teasing, for years after.  It wasn't even a naughty story...just funny.  I learned not to over share at work.

3) Since that unfortunate Christmas 2012 incident, Sam can't even look at a cup of egg nog. How about you? Do you like egg nog? I really like eggnog, especially with a drop of adult beverage in it

4) For special events, Sam slips on her favorite piece of jewelry: a charm bracelet that once belonged to her grandmother. Do you have a special treasure from a previous generation?
I have a piece of amber that has been set for a necklace that was my mom's.

5) The only Christmas card Sam has received so far in 2013 is from her insurance agent. How about you? Have any holiday cards arrived yet? We have a single Card, I don't send cards any more, but I try to return a card if I get one.  Since I am leaving Tuesday, I need to get on it.

6) Because of the chill in the air, Sam gave her dog his Christmas gift -- a sweater -- early this year. He's already gotten compliments on it. Are there any pets on your gift list?
Gwennie and Totem have their gifts already,  they both got a new collar and we got a bed for Gwen that we are trying to get her to use.

7) Do you need snow to get "into the spirit?" No, having lived in CA we never got it.  We have had some snow already and might get it this year, which would be nice, as last nights rain dissolved the majority of it.

8) Are you going to get/have you gotten a flu shot this year? We got it last week.

9) December is an important fundraising month for charities. Here's your chance to plug a worthy cause that means a lot to you. The Humane Society.

Chatting about the Holidays

1.  Have you baked any Christmas cookies yet? No, since Christmas will be at DD1, and Mr BC and I don't need to eat cookies here in MO.
2.  Have you finished your shopping yet? And what did you get me? No, but I have started. Since I am taking an airplane to CA I will finish it out there.  Wendell you have my best wishes for a ton of carrots and to feel better.
3.  If you had reindeer like the story of Santa, what would you name them. (Be creative.) Remember, they were Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, Blitzen, and Rudolf. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, go on to the next question, please. Aches, Pains, Trouble, and Worry, I wish they would dash away, dash away, all.
4.  What was the most memorable Christmas gift you ever gave or received? We gave DD2 a new VW Beetle, one Christmas. We wrapped a small toy version of it with a half dozen clues that eventually led her to the garage. I
t was a total surprise.
5.  Please tell me something new, interesting, or funny.

A Chat on the Porch

1.  Please tell me the three most valuable things you learned as a child or young person.
That ultimately life is not fair so you make the best of it.
My mom and dad knew more than I thought they did.
Always Flush.
2.  Did you participate in Black Friday or Cyber Monday?
I did order something for Christmas online. See my last post for my feelings about Black Friday.
3.  Do you pray? I bow my head when others pray.  I prayed as a kid, and though I question all the time, I do find myself beseeching the great unknown, in times of trouble, (Like when Mr BC was having an angiogram last week, all is well) so I guess I do pray.
4.  Have you been invited to any parties to celebrate Christmas or New Year? I am going to CA on Dec 17, for a weeklong moving party, with DD1, when they move into their first home. I will spend the day after Christmas with my brother and his family.  No specific party, though.
5.  Have you ever owned cowboy boots or a cowboy hat? (A cowboy? Tee-hee :) Just had to throw that one in for fun!)  I had a Cowboy hat and boots when I was little and have a picture of it somewhere.

Back to Black-Saturday 9

On your mark, Get set,
Black Friday!
1) Black is this week's signature color because Friday, November 29, was "Black Friday," when retailers cut their prices and consumers flock to the stores. Did you score any "Black Friday" bargains?
I don't do BLACK FRIDAY or Brown Thursday, can't stand that stores opened Thanksgiving day. Get your Store coupon! I have/will order on line again this year.

Sugar Shack-Saturday 9

This song was popular 50 years ago today. Hear it here.

1) In this song, our hero orders espresso. What's your standard coffee order? During the holiday season I usually order Pumpkin Spice or something special for the holiday.  At home, where I usually drink my coffee, I will have regular coffee with International Delight Cinnabon Flavor.

Flying Cars-Revisited.

In a previous post, I wondered where my flying car was.....Here is the answer.  I have a feeling it will never happen if mankind has those kinds of restrictions.

The ASK Meme, Part 1-Sunday Stealing

1. What’s your favorite candle scent?
I like the scents, that are like something baking. I don't bake as much and microwaves don't make the house smell as evocative as times past.
2. What female celebrity do you wish was your sister?
I have no sisters, so....Melissa McCarthy seems very likable and real.  I have loved her since the Gilmore girls.

I love to read.  The prompt today is to talk about a book I love.  I would find it hard to just give you one book that I love.  When I was a child, I loved Little Women, I was like Jo but I aspired to be as good as Beth.

Chatting About This and That

  1. Do you have any special plans for this week? I always have plans, but I am not so good at follow thru.  I want to finish fixing up my bathroom, which involves some hemming with iron on tape and hanging a new shelf....of course that was the plan last week.  It is raining for the next couple of days, so I have no reason to do something around the house.  I just have to get off the computer.

Come to My Window-Saturday 9

Melissa Etheridge is a breast cancer survivor and October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Please spread the word about early detection.

1) This song is about a woman passionate about love and willing to pursue it, no matter what "they say." Are you fearless when it comes to public opinion? Or do you worry about what "they" think of you?
Here in the Bible Belt, Missouri's a Red State, I tend to keep somewhat quiet about my thoughts on Religion and Politics as they differ so much, even from close friends.  I am not going to change anyone's mind and I don't actually like debate.  The past two weeks have been different though, all of congress has been stupid. I don't feel the same way about airing some things on my blog as it seems so much more anonymous. So here is my message to the GOP.

 2) Melissa's father was a high school teacher. Tell us about a teacher who had an impact on you.
Unfortunately, I don't remember a teacher who really stands out in a positive way, I had a lot of good teachers over the years.  However, if one counts the teachers who had a negative impact on me, it would be my 8th grade teacher, Mr. Ginsberg, I even remember his name after all these years.  I was on the chubby side when I was 12 or 13, I also was developing my breasts and was self conscious.  I tended to stand around with my arms crossed over my chest.  He called me Buddha, all the time,  and I was hugely embarrassed.  I guess I could have objected now, but at the time, the late 50's, there was no political correctness or anti harassment. It was bullying pure and simple. I guess he thought he was being funny....Not!  He was a terrible person and should not have been a teacher.

Random, Randomness - Sunday Stealing

1.  How did you choose your baby's or pet's names?
When we were selecting a name for our corgi, we wanted to pick a Welsh one with some meaning. One of the meanings of Gwendolyn is white circle. Our Gwennie had a white ring around her neck.

A Kick in the Head-Saturday 9

1) In the song, Dean sings, "Ain't That a Kick in the Head?" to express how delighted he is to discover the girl loves him. When was the last time you were pleasantly surprised? I have been pleasantly surprised that I love my new home here in Missouri so much.  It is wonderful here with the change of seasons, and Mr BC's bird feeders bring the nature to our yard.

Chatting about Bluegrass

Everyday Ruralty

1.  How well do you handle change? Better than some at my age and circumstance (old and retired).  I like a little change it makes life interesting. I am not always crabbing about how it use to be better, even though some times 'it did use to be better.'   I can adapt eventually to most change. I initially had a hard time adjusting to retirement, I kept feeling at the end of the day, that there was something I didn't get done.

Chatting on the Porch-Epic Fail

Everyday Ruralty
  • What's  the one thing you feel is the biggest waste of  your time during an average week?Playing games on the computer.  Last night, I was playing Spider Solitaire and decided I would go to bed when I won a game.  Half an hour later I finally went to bed.... a loser.

Dominoes - Saturday 9

I have to say I like the other Pink better. Unfamiliar with this week's song? Listen to it here.

1) Have you ever carefully set up dominos and then watched them fall? Or built a house out of playing cards? When I was a kid. A lot of work for such a short impact.

Chatting-Getting Ready for Fall

Everyday Ruralty

1.  Did you ever take piano lessons, as a child or adult? No, I tried violin in 5th grade and lasted 3 months....the amount of time for the rental of the violin.

2.  How many times do you eat out each month? About once a month, we are both always on a diet...so it is easier not to go out.  But if it is a special occasion we will go out.

How I Should Have Spent My Vacation

I would love to say that our vacation to Santa Barbara was an unqualified success.....but that would be painting too rosy of a picture.  The Boys, including my son-in law were in the middle of a virus.....that just kept giving.  SIL brought it home from Florida, the previous week.  Two days later DD1 came down with it and was hit harder than the grandsons.  Then Caшa, who had seemed to be improving, got an ear infection, so off we went to Urgent Care.  Everyone would have a good day then the next.....be really congested, or coughing.....Grandma and Grandpa Bankerchick came down with it the second week  and all bets for fun, were off.  Gratefully the Au Pair never got it...so we all got ....some... rest.  But it put a damper on the plans for the visit

Sunday Stealing

What would you choose to be famous for?
I would like to be famous for finding a cure for something serious.

If you have a webcam, are you ever paranoid people can see you?
No, not really I am not sure how many kicks a voyeur would get of me sitting in my blue chair. I always close my computer when not in use.
