My Favorite Reads

11/3

I love to read.  The prompt today is to talk about a book I love.  I would find it hard to just give you one book that I love.  When I was a child, I loved Little Women, I was like Jo but I aspired to be as good as Beth.

There were six dolls to be taken up and dressed every morning, for Beth was a child still, and loved her pets as well as ever. Not one whole or handsome one among them; all were outcasts till Beth took them in; for, when her sisters outgrew these idols, they passed to her.... Beth cherished them all the more tenderly for that very reason, and set up a hospital for infirm dolls. No pins were ever stuck into their cotton vitals; no harsh words or blows were ever given them; no neglect ever saddened the heart of the most repulsive: but all were fed and clothed, nursed and caressed, with an affection which never failed.” Louisa May Alcott, Little Women

I have often written here about my love of Austen, I didn't read her until I was an adult and saw the series Pride and Prejudice, with Colin Firth.  I decided to read the book and fell in love with Austen.  She weaves words into poetry. You have to spend time reading Austen and let the words soak into your soul. I have read all her books and my favorite is Persuasion, it is probably her most romantic and I believe the character of Anne was most like her, at least I like to believe that.

You pierce my soul. I am half agony, half hope...I have loved none but you.”
Jane Austen, Persuasion

  1. I can always watch or read Little Women. It was my favourite read when I was younger. I didn't come across Jane Austen until later in life.

  2. I love reading and my tastes are eclectic but one book that I read years ago sticks in my mind - Sara Dane by Catherine Gaskin, inspired by the true story of Mary Reibey, a woman convict who married an officer while travelling to Australia, went on to become a successful businesswoman in her own right.

  3. I liked Pride and Prejudice - a sort of romantic comedy of its time. I haven't read any others of hers though.
