Wendell's Magic Wand Chat

1.  Do you ever watch old TV shows or movies from your childhood or youth? When we first got Netflix, I watched all of the Star Trek Franchise. It took almost 2 years.

2.  Have you ever adopted a rescued animal? Oh yes, most recently, we adopted Caspar a minature dashound, he is adorable and now we have 3 dogs, Totem is a rescue and Gwennie our corgi, is from a breeder. The are all between 6-7 years old.

3.  Are you good at keeping track of paperwork and records? Sort of, I have a file cabinet and a fire proof box.  It works well if I remember to file things back.

4.  What would you like the Magic Wendell Fairy to poof with his wand, and turn into a treat for you? Any snack or sweet you would like. It doesn't have tpo do with carrots, or HE'D eat it!  I have been looking all over for peach ice cream. Since there has been a recall on some peaches, I might not find it this year. i'll get him a carrot cake.

5.  Tell me something interesting-please.
I made a peach pie and I am eating with vanilla ice cream.  It will have to do if Wendell can't come through.

Saturday 9 in the Potterverse

1) This song refers to the summer breezes and winds of mid-July. Now that July is almost over, how would you describe this month's weather where you are?  The first two weeks were lovely so cool and dry, more like Spring than July, now it is just hot and sticky.

2) The lyrics mention the "perfect plans." Do you have plans for today? Or will you just let this summer Saturday unfold? We will walk the dogs and then decide, I would like to go out to dinner for my birthday.
3) This week's artist, k. d. lang, attended Red Deer Community College in Alberta. Red Deer's school colors are green, black and silver. What were your school colors?  Blue, white and red....we are the Matadors.

4) She had a bit part in the 2006 murder mystery The Black Dahlia. Do you enjoy murder mysteries? I like them on television, especially British mystery.  We enjoy the whole Inspector Morse genre on PBS and we just subscribed to Acorn which is entirely British TV. We are picking up the rest of the Midsomer Murders there, with the new guy.  It has many other shows that we can explore this summer.

5) Ms. lang is a vegetarian. What's the last beef, chicken, pork or fish you ate? A hamburger several evenings ago, with real beef, rather than vegie or turkey burger.
6) In 2000, when this song was released, California suffered a series of blackouts. Has your power gone out this summer?  Yes, this spring, it has gone out with some of our thunderstorms.  It is not usually out for more than an hour.

7) Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire also came out in 2000. Did you read it?  I haven't read them, but I have seen and enjoyed the movies.  I usually watch one of the movies again during a marathon on tv to pick up more of the plot.  I was usually confused by some of the minutia of the Potterverse.

These are some of the things I miss, in every Harry Potter Movie

8) Which would you rather have on your hot dog: sauerkraut, ketchup/mustard/relish or chili? Ketchup or Chili.  I don't eat too many hot dogs except when we go camping.
9) If you had your choice, which would you prefer: new shoes or a new wallet?  New shoes.  I have to go shopping for a pair soon, that my orthotic will fit into. They work with my sport shoe but I need some new shoes for every day, as I wear the orthotic all the time. It has worked wonders for my feet.

Friday Fragments-HAPPY DAAA AY TO MEEE!

Half-Past Kissin' Time
It is time for Friday Fragments from Half Past Kissing Time

Happy Birthday Katie - on the Google page!
I woke up today and didn't remember right away..... that it was my birthday, until Google and Mr BC told me.  Mr BC sang out Happy DAAA AY to you. That is our Birthday song since DD2 sang Happy DAAA AY to MEEE! when she was 4 years old. He admitted later that he had just seen a reminder on Facebook  It is a disconcerting fact that the interwebs know too much about you.  We hope to go out to dinner for my birthday, tomorrow with DD2!
But this is so true too!
I don't have corgoon.  Just one sweet Gwennie.

"Corgi" is a Welsh word - a compound of cor (dwarf) and ci (dog).  The proper plural form is thus "Corgwn" -
- which  would be pronounced something like "corgoon."

"I list this as "trivia" because the word has been so Anglicized that "corgis" is in common usage, and your use of "corgwn" in a conversation will be seen as pompous intellectualism, unless perhaps you engage your audience by also sharing some of the other English words derived from Welsh (penguin?)" TYWKIWDBI.

I learned about corgwn from TYWKIWDBI  a blogger I follow for his quite interesting and varied posts. He got it from a QI podcast another QI site I will explore.

This is not a commercial for English Muffins....but, I am so sorry I did not buy two of these as they are to die for and when I go back to get some more, they will not be available.  It really tastes like apple pie.

Hippo has things to do.  Just like me, so have a great weekend.

Grown-Up Chats

1.  Other than those who live in your home, who's the last person who came to your front door? It was the guy who mows our yard and our daughter's yard.  He was done and I needed to pay him.  It was well worth it.  He will come again in 2 weeks.

2.  Do you have many photos around your home? Pictures of DD's graduations. And pictures of the grandsons.  I also have a prominent picture of Mr.BC's mom.  It is her HS graduation pic.  We live in the house she left to us and we can see her every day.

3.  Do you like mint? Is there a favorite type of mint for you? How do you enjoy it?  Yes, I love mint, all kinds.  Currently I have a bag of Mint M&M's in the kitchen and enjoy a handful when I remember they are there.

4.  Do you enjoy your own parties and other times with guests, or are you so busy working...? I mostly have folks for dinner and I try to make meals that can be prepared ahead, so I can enjoy my guests.

5.  What do you want to be when you grow up more? Job, hobby, self improvement, etc. As I am a senior citizens I think I have grown up about as much as I can.  I just hope I don't grow infantile.

Living on the Corner of Lead and Zinc - Saturday 9

If you're not familiar with today's song, you can hear it here.

1) Recorded by Johnny Cash, "Ring of Fire" was written by his wife, June Carter. Johnny's daughter Roseanne says it's about "the transformative power of their love." What's your favorite love song?  Unchained Melody by the
Righteous Brothers.  All incarnations and covers..

2) Though more than 50 years old, this song is still popular today. Country Music Television named it one of the best and most requested of all time. Are you a country music fan?  Yes, I love most country music,  Johnny Cash is way up there with the classic artists.  I also love some of the newer singers.

3) This recording features mariachi horns, inspired by Mexican folk music. Have you ever been to Mexico?  Yes, living in CA, I have been over the border in Baja several times.  When I was 18 I went with a group tour to Mexico City and Acapulco. It was totally different from Baja California.

4) Cash's birth certificate said, "J. R. Cash," and "J.R." is what his parents always called him. When he enlisted in the Air Force, Uncle Sam refused to let him simply go by initials, so he chose the name "John." If you could choose a different name for yourself, what would it be?  My mom wanted to call me Suzanne, but my dad said no....I still wonder why.  In the 60's I changed my name from Kathy to Katie.

5) Cash and his first wife, Vivian, had their first date at a roller skating rink. Tell us about one of your first dates. Mr BC and I went to a drive-in movie on a double date for our first date. He was very polite, but I can't say much for the couple in the back seat.  We never dated with them again.  We saw The Loved One and Cheyenne Autumn.  He kissed me during the second movie.

6) Cash died in September, 2003, four months after he lost his second wife, and love of his life, June. The cause of death given was complications from diabetes, but his children believe he died of a broken heart. Do you think that's possible? I think that happens a lot to long married older couples with health issues.  But short of a heart attack, I don't think so.

7) Cash was known as "The Man in Black." What color do you wear most often? Pastel colors, pink, blue, yellow. I don't wear dark colors much now that I don't work.

8) There's a Johnny Cash Museum in Nashville. What's the last museum you visited? Crystal Bridges, it is an American art museum in Bentonville, Arkansas.  I wrote about it here.  It is a lovely spot to visit and is a great museum, you can visit for free.

9) A stretch of Tennessee Highway 31E is known as "Johnny Cash Parkway." What street in your town is named for a famous person? We have a Jefferson Street here in 'Craterville' (so called for our awful streets) I would assume it is for the president, of the same name.  We also have a Daugherty St. named for W.A.
Daugherty, who opened up lead mines in the general area.  It has been a somewhat ugly area around the edges of our towns, ever since, until the government started cleaning up the chat piles and mines in the 90's.  We have a lot of streets named after miners and mines.

Friday Fragments

Half-Past Kissin' Time
Found this on a Blog I follow:  http://retired-not-tired.blogspot.com/
Click the Picture  to find out more.

Friday Fragments are bits and pieces of your week that are usually brief; too short for a stand-alone post, but too good to discard.

This is a Husky-Corgi mix,
Probably the cutest dog I have seen since my dogs.

**********************************

                                                       ***********************************************************************
I just got a new carpet shampooer, so I don't have to rent one
and I still wish someone would come and clean for me.
**************************************************************************
We took the dogs walking at the park and was sorry to find out they had moved all the benches along the path over to the new playground they have built.  I have to hope with all the work they are doing to make the park more usable and beautiful, they are going to replace the benches they have moved.  I am too old to get up and down off the grass.  The park is not actually in my town so I have to hope benches are in the city plans.

******************************************

My dogs are off of their regular food and meal time involves a lot of coaxing and cheese sprinkling.  I would consider that it was summer heat but it has been cooler.  And after all the injury I go through to feed them their premium food.  I cut my fingers every few days on the aluminium foil lids, it got my thumb, this morning.  Dang....I wish my fingers and hands worked better.

*****************************************************
Hippo has had enough: and so have I.
Thanks for reading.

Chatting #148

1.  D3 is facing wisdom teeth removal. Have you had your wisdom teeth removed? Yes, several years ago.  I have had lots of dental work since. Just this past year, I have had a lot of painful and expensive work....take care of your teeth.

2.  Today Wendell is serving iced tea, iced coffee, and carrot juice. He wants me to ask you which you'd prefer.  I am loving ice coffee this summer, so that will do, Carrot juice is not my cup o' tea, Wendell, but ice tea would be my second choice.

3.  If you use a crock pot, do you have a favorite recipe? If not, what is your favorite, easy "go to" recipe? Crockpot enchiladas, it is sort of a layered casserole. Layer your enchilada ingredients, with your sauce, and about 6-8 tortillas I used canned sauce, and cook 5-6 hours.  I make it in the oven the rest of the year, but in the crock pot in the summer.  Tamale pie is good too.  Recipes are online for both.

4.  Do you prefer to wash dishes by hand or dishwasher? Yes, I know some of us probably don't like dish washing. Wendell flat out refuses! I just answered this question this weekend and I like to wash by hand first thing in the morning so that I can soak my hands in hot water. I set them to dry in the dishwasher, then run them all when I get a load.

5.  What are you looking forward to?  Back to dental work, I want to get my bridge work completed so I can chew again. I am also ready to get the RV fixed and get some travel in this summer.

I just took the doggies for a walk and ran into Maggie and Jiggs heading for home.  We weren't able to go to the Blue Grass festival with them on the 4th, and they said, as usual, since Mr BC and I weren't with them, the weather was beautiful, and maybe we are weather jinxes. I wish the RV were already serviced so we could have traveled locally this week as the weather has been dry and rather cool.

Already Gone - Saturday 9

Saturday 9: Already Gone
(recommended by Diana)
If you're not familiar with today's song, you can hear it here

1) Eagles lead singer Glenn Frey proclaims that he's "feeling strong." How would you describe yourself this fine Saturday?  My poison ivy is still itchy.

2) The song begins with a rumor: "I heard some people talking just the other other day ..." Have you heard anything juicy/interesting lately? Please share!  Is Queen Elizabeth Really encouraging Charles to divorce Camilla?  And Duchess Kate is feuding with the Queen and weighs only 91 pounds...the tabloids are dancing on Diana's grave. Is this really important???

3) When "Already Gone" was popular, the news was dominated by Richard Nixon and the Watergate scandal. What do you consider today's top news story? Today, Israel and Palestine are at it again....the Middle East is a real hot spot.
4) In the 1970s, Eagles Glenn Frey and Don Henley were at the center of a social circle of very creative people, including singer Linda Ronstadt, singer-songwriter Jackson Browne and actor-comedian Steve Martin. How do you express your creativity? I do a little crafting and blogging.

5) Even though they broke up in 1980, the Eagles are currently on a reunion tour, and after knowing each other more than 40 years, Frey and Henley still consider each other friends. What quality to do you value most in a friendship? A good friend does not make you feel guilty, if they haven't seen you for a while. My best friends are separated by distance now.  When I get together with my good friend we pick the conversation right up where it left off.

6) Are there any mirrors in the room you're in right now?  Yes, I have a mirrored shelf, set into the wall, over my couch with some knick-knacks on it and pictures of the girls.  It is very 1950's

7) What's the last beverage you drank with ice? Iced Coffee. This summer I have it instead of hot coffee.

8) Whole, skim, 2%, half-and-half, almond or soy ... what kind of milk is in your refrigerator right now?  Non-Fat lactose free milk.

9) Sam likes to mix sliced almonds into her salad. What do you think makes a good salad? I love taco salads as a whole meal,  For a light salad, I like some fruit in them, like pears and strawberries, and nuts, with balsamic dressing.

Is That Pizza I Smell? Chat #147

1.  Do you like cucumbers? Is there a favorite way for you to prepare them?  I don't like them but Mr BC is very fond of the larger English cucumber.  I slice them in medium thin slices w/o peeling them and cover them in a jar with fat free Italian dressing with a splash more of garlic vinegar and shake.  They pickle for a while and don't last long around here.

2.  How good a housekeeper are you? So so.

3.  Please finish this: To spend a day at a spa with a pedicure and massage and aroma therapy would be amazing!

4.  How do you handle times when you are "down" or "blue"( depressed )? I am rarely down, Though I think sometimes I worry unnecessarily and have to tell myself to snap out of it,

5.  Have you started using essential oils, since they have become so popular?  I am a fan of WD40, is that essential enough?

The 4th of July Summer Long Celebration

http://theoatmeal.com/
Matthew over at The Oatmeal has captured my Gwennie.  She has actually hidden out in the shower for the better part of last week, as a result of the now, two week long 4th of July "celebrations".  I don't know if kids lighting fire crackers at all hours, was what John Adams had in mind when he said:

I am apt to believe that (this day) will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty....ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports,  bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forevermore.

On many of the past several days, we have had massive thunder and lightening storms, in between the fire cracker blasts.  I am thoroughly tired of fireworks, as is Gwennie.

Shepherd of the Hills, Branson MO
  3. What is your favorite kind of salad dressing?  I currently have a crush on all things Balsamic vinegar, like salad dressing.  Trader Joes has a terrific Basalmic glaze, that I cook with.  I bought 4 bottles of it last time I was in Kansas City.
  4. When was the last time you saw someone from your high school days? At our 30th reunion.  They are mostly in CA.  I have a dear friend who I keep up with on Facebook.
