SONDER April A to Z

themetapicture.com/
Sonder:   in French it means to probe or survey and as such, it could be the basis for the definition above which came from The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows, a very interesting Tumblr in its own right.

n. the realization that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own—populated with their own ambitions, friends, routines, worries and inherited craziness—an epic story that continues invisibly around you like an anthill sprawling deep underground, with elaborate passageways to thousands of other lives that you’ll never know existed, in which you might appear only once, as an extra sipping coffee in the background, as a blur of traffic passing on the highway, as a lighted window at dusk.

Sonder is a vital part of the internet and blogs, a vital part of all authors who write about other people.  As we all live in our own worlds it is important to look around us and try to understand that we are just one individual who makes up just one small part of the world, whole.

  1. I need to show this definition to a few people who think their vibrancy makes up the entire world.

  3. I don't think I have ever considered that there might be a word to describe this, but your post nailed that for me! I have heard that only 10% of reality can be known by our five senses, and that 90% is unseen. We can certainly be the unseen part in many people's lives, and those who believe the world revolves around them lose a lot of depth when they fail to notice others!

    Happy S day!

  5. An important observation to keep in mind, but still makes me feel really small. Being 5 feet 4 inches tall in heels doesn't help either. (;

  6. Isn't it wonderful to know there is no reason to have to carry the whole burden of the world by oneself? Great post topic. Thank you!

  7. Maybe I'm strange but didn't you ever look at a person at a ball game or on the street and wonder what their life was like, what their story was, who they are? I never realized that's what that was called!
    Great post Katie!

  8. Everyone has a story. I meet a good story a day from someone. Love it.

  9. I guess this word is a nice way of summing up that no one person is the center of the universe.

  10. Cool little word for a very complex concept. It's new one on me. I like it.
